Are Rats The Right Pet For You?
Rats make amazing pets, but only for the right people. While rats are smart, friendly, cuddly, and curious, they also require some time and effort on your part. Despite their small size rats require a sizable cage to live in, and this will cost you quite a bit to buy and take weekly time to clean. You will need to have multiple rats (at least 2 same sex or altered), because as social animals they don't do well when housed solo. They also require vet trips when ill and because of their respiratory system's vulnerability most rats will need at least one vet trip in their lives. Luckily rats don't need vaccines or yearly vet checkups but its still good to have a vet fund for when your rats get sick.
You also want to be sure you have enough time for your rats. Despite their small size rats are very social creatures and they thrive on companionship and interaction. Rats love to interact with their owners and its also a great way for you to relax and bond with your pets.
