Step 1:
To begin, place a book behind your rat. Lure them into position a few inches in front of it (with their tail pointed towards the book), then cue them to backup. If they seem confused about backing up onto the book, bring in your finger straddle to help guide them up and onto it the first few times, then work on them backing up and onto the book on their own.

Step 2:
Once your rat masters backing up and onto one book, begin to gradually increase the number of books your rat is backing up and onto. Continue to increase the number of books until your rat is backing up a near vertical wall.

Step 3:
Now switch out the books for a sloped surface. Lure your rat into position, then cue them to back up and onto the slopped wall. Practice this step until your rat can back up the sloped surface without any help.

Step 4:
Finally, switch out the sloped surface for a vertical wall (or in my case, a sturdy wooden house)! Once your rat can back up and onto this wall on cue, they have mastered this trick!
