Children's Liquid Motrin:
You can get Children's Motrin (100 mg/ 5mL) at any pharmacy over the counter, or buy it online here. Make sure to get the wild berry (original berry) flavor which rats absolutely love the taste of! Motrin is also called Advil, Ibuprofen, and Nurofen.
Motrin is great at reducing swelling/inflammation and is wonderful as a pain relief for rats. This should be given every 6, 8, or 12 hours depending on the severity of pain/inflammation
*Motrin is a NSAID and CANNOT be given within 24 hours of any other NSAID (like metacam) or any steroids (like prednisone) unless directed by a vet. Make sure to always give motrin with food or after food.
For mild to moderate pain/inflammation use a dosing of 20mg/kg (shown in chart below). - Dose every 6, 8, or 12 hours as needed.
For severe pain/inflammation use a dosing of 30mg/kg (shown in chart below). - Dose every 6 to 8 hours as needed.

Infant Liquid Mortrin/ Ibuprofen tablets:
You can get Infant Motrin or ibuprofen tablets at any pharmacy over the counter, or buy the infant version online here. If getting the infant version, try to get the wild berry (original berry) flavor as rats absolutely love the taste of it! Due to it being twice the concentration of children's motrin (40 mg/mL), you only have to give half the amount, making it great for sick rats that aren't keen on eating much. Motrin is also called Advil, Ibuprofen, and Nurofen.
Motrin is great at reducing swelling/inflammation and is wonderful as a pain relief for rats. This should be given every 6, 8, or 12 hours depending on the severity of pain/inflammation. For this chart, we will be using a solution of 40 mg/ml.
Please follow the mixing instructions below depending on which version or mortrin/ibuprofen/nurofen you have.
Infant motrin (40 mg/ml): Infant mortrin is already in a suspension of 40 mg/ml and can be dosed using the chart below immediately.
Ibuprofen 200 mg tablets: Crush up one 200 mg tablet and dissolve it into 5 ml of water or syrup. This makes 40 mg/ml.
Ibuprofen 400 mg tablets: Crush up one 400 mg tablet and dissolve it into 10 ml of water or syrup. This makes 40 mg/ml.

Children's Liquid Tylenol/Infant Liquid Tylenol (aka paracetamol):
You can buy liquid children's or infant Tylenol over the counter at most store pharmacies, or you can buy it online here. Cherry flavor tends to go over best in my experience. Both infant tylenol and children's tylenol have the same dosing, however infant tylenol comes in smaller 1-2 fl oz bottles while children's tylenol comes in larger 4 fl oz bottles.
Tylenol is a mild pain reliever (not an anti-inflammatory) and is safe to give with steroids and NSAID's.
* As childrens and infant tylenol/paracetamol is very dilute, its often better to mix up your own more concentrated dose using adult pills. I will discuss how to do this below this section, but be aware that if you use the children's/infant versions of this medication you will often be giving several syringes full at each dosing period.
Dosage for Children’s Tylenol by rat weight - Dose every 4-6 hours while needed

Acetaminophen/Paracetamol (Tylenol) - 500mg Tablets
You can buy tylenol/acetaminophen/paracetamol 500 mg tablets at any local grocery store, or here online.
Because of how dilute children's/infant versions of tylenol/acetaminophen/paracetamol (different names, same medicine) is, its often better to crush up adult 500mg pills and compound them yourself in order to make the amount you need to get into your rat more manageable.
To dose 500mg tylenol/acetaminophen/paracetamol tablets for rats, start by crushing up one tablet and dissolving it into 3ml of water OR syrup. I recommend using syrup, as it can be hard to fully dissolve tablets into water even when crushed.
In addiion to this, these tablets are very bitter tasting and thus it is muchh easier to get them into your rat if you compund the crushed tablet into something sweet or savory (maple syrup, applesauce, baby food, etc.)
Dosing chart - dose at 200 mg/kg every 4-6 hours as needed:

Meloxicam/Metacam 0.5 mg/mL
Meloxicam, also known as metacam or loxicom, is a powerful pain killer/anti-inflammatory. Its more powerful of a pain killer/anti-anflammatory than motrin, however unlike motrin its typically prescription only and not over the counter.
*Meloxicam is a NSAID and CANNOT be given within 24 hours of any other NSAID (like motrin) or any steroids (like prednisone) unless directed by a vet. Make sure to always give meloxicam with food or after food.
For mild to moderate pain/inflammation use a mid-ranged dosing of 1mg/kg (shown in chart below). You can dose once every 24 hours, or give half every 12 hours for most effective pain relief.
For severe pain/inflammation use a dosing of 2mg/kg (shown in chart below). You can dose once every 24 hours, or give half every 12 hours for most effective pain relief.

Prednisone/Prednisolone
Prednisone (aka Prednisolone) is a steroid used to treat inflammation. It can cross the blood brain barrier and is thus good for treating inflammation in the brain (such as inflammation caused by pituitary gland tumors or ear infections). You can buy prednisone 1 mg tablets here
And you can buy prednisone 5 mg tablets here
Please follow the mixing instructions below that correspond to the prednisone you have.
Prednisone 1 mg tablets: Mix 5 of the 1 mg tablets with 2 mL of water or syrup. This becomes 2..5 mg/ml.
Prednisone 5 mg tablets: Mix one 5 mg tablet with 2 mL of water or syrup. This becomes 2.5 mg/ml.
If giving prednisone for more than 4 days, you must switch to a wean down reduction schedule before taking the rat off of it. DO NOT take a rat off of prednisone cold turkey if giving it for over 4 days (doing so will cause nasty side effects for the rat). Below the dosing chart you will find a wean down schedule chart.
*Prednisone is a steroid and CANNOT be given within 24 hours of NSAID such as Metacam or Motrin unless directed to by a vet. Always give Prednisone with or after food.*
Dosing for Prednisone 2.5 mg/ml by weight using a moderate 1.1 mg/kg dose - Dose once every 12 hours for max effectiveness (can be switched to double the dose once a day if need be)
Wean down schedule chart (for rats kept on prednisone for 4+ days)

Parasite Treatment - Revolution
You can order kitten/cat (both have the same dosage, however cat tubes are larger and you get more for your money so it's better for larger groups of rats) revolution online fairly cheap without a script here. It takes about 8-14 days to arrive from the site listed. Some places may also sell it over the counter without a prescription, however most don't so you may have to order it online or buy it from your vet. Dog revolution may also be used, but as its more concentrated you will need to lessen the dose.
Do NOT buy the plus version - only use regular revolution for rats!
Revolution is safe for pregnant and nursing moms. Babies do not need separate doses as the medicine secretes through the moms milk supply to treat the babies. Once babies pass 3 weeks and are mostly weaned, they will need to be treated with their own drop of revolution.
General dosing: To dose, place a drop of revolution per pound of rat (round up) on the skin on the back of the rat's neck. Part the fur on their neck to access the skin, and distract the rat with a lickable treat while you place the drop onto their skin. Continue to distract them for about 30 seconds so it can dry, after which you can place the rat back with their cagemates. All rats living together and sharing the same living space will need treatment regardless of if they show symptoms or not. If wanted, treatment can be reapplied after 14 days if the mite/lice/fleas infestation is bad. Do not bathe the rat before or right after treatment. Don't bathe them for at least a week after applying revolution
For best results be sure to clean out the cage, dumping any bedding that was inside, wash any fabric, wipe down shelves, bars, and so forth. If you think the parasites came from your bedding, you can freeze it before placing it back into the cage.
Kitten Revolution Dosage: One drop of revolution on the back of the neck per pound (450 grams) of rat (round up, if rat is under a pound just do one drop), allow revolution to dry for 30 seconds (distract with a treat) before allowing other rats to interact. Its okay for the rats to ingest revolution by licking it, but most of it must absorb for it to be effective. If parasites persist, treat again in 2 weeks.
Specific dosing instructions for kitten/cat revolution 60/ml (general dosing works due to how safe revolution is for rats, but if you'd like to specifically dose by weight its dosed at 6-10 mg/kg for rats).
Specific dosing instructions for dog revolution 120mg/ml (general dosing works due to how safe revolution is for rats, but if you'd like to specifically dose by weight its dosed at 6-10 mg/kg for rats).
