Paw Target
Props:
- Target stick (I made mine by sticking an unsharpened pencil into a cork!)
Paw targeting is a great trick to train your rats early on. Not only is it an easy trick that helps build their confidence, but it can be used to teach more complex tricks down the road.
You can also find out how to teach your rat an alternative version of targeting with their nose here.

Step 1:
To start, hold the target in one hand and a treat in the other. Lure your rat into a standing position with the treat, then slip the target under their paw. Your rat should be bobbing up and down (somewhat) while they try and reach for the treat, so as soon as their paw accidentally brushes the target, reward them!

Step 2:
Repeat this 5-10 times, then offer the target alone. If your rat places their paw on it, reward. If they fail to do so after 3 attempts, repeat step 1 a few more times and then try again.
