For our 44th foraging Friday I will be reviewing the Alfie Pet Carey Interactive Treats Puzzle Toy. This is a foraging toy is primarily made for cats and dogs, but it works just as well for rats. To fill this toy is pretty simple - you just turn the red piece so that it isn't covering any of the holes, then lift the yellow covers up, and place treats into the cups underneath. Then to make it foraging-ready you have 3 options - you can either put it on level 1, which requires you to remove the yellow covers and just have on the red piece. Or you can put it on level 2, which requires you to have the yellow covers on but the red piece off. And finally you can have it on level 3, which requires you to cover the treat-filled holes with the yellow covers and then to slide the red piece right over each yellow cover (this is the hardest difficulty). As far as the rats using this toy goes there are 3 different levels to play with this toy. If you only have the red pieces covering each treat-filled hole, then all they have to do is push aside the red pieces so they can get to the treats underneath. Alternatively if you are using the 2nd level of covering the holes with the yellow covers alone then the rats will need to use their nose and paws to lift them up in order to get to the treats underneath. You may need to help them learn to do this at first, but once they master it they will really enjoy opening up each cover. Finally if you use the 3rd difficulty level then the rats will need to push aside the red piece and then lift up the yellow cover before being able to get to the tasty treats below! This level will likely need some help from you to learn at first, but if you have practiced the previous 2 levels then your rats should pick it up pretty quickly. Cleaning wise this toy is fully made of plastic so its quick and easy to just wipe it down and clean whenever crumbs are left from the treats you use. I haven't yet tried to use any soft treats of liquid treats in this foraging toy, however I should be just as easy to clean. Overall this is a fun and challenging foraging toy that is a great way to teach your rats that they may need to sometimes do multiple behaviors before they get to their treats. Its leveling system is unique in that it builds on itself and includes different actions, which is something a lot of foraging toys lack. All in all I found this to be an amazing foraging toy for my rats and it has quickly becoming one of their (and my) favorites!
